One very interesting 1 day trip would be to Leonsberg (take minibus 4 or taxi there) on Suriname River; if you're stopping at Leonsberg restaurant try the saoto soup. Then take a ferry to Nieuw Amsterdam, the capital of the Javanese district of Commewijne. Inside the old fortress you can visit an open air museum.
